This article develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the role of state-level policies towards the dairy sector in the presence of farmland amenity benefits, and applies it to Connecticut. Milk supply, demand and amenity benefit functions are estimated, and three exogenously determined milk prices are considered. The empirical findings show, under each price scenario, the extent to which land is underallocated to the dairy sector if amenity benefits are ignored. Analysis of policy options reveals that a partial production cost subsidy represents the least-cost alternative for attaining the socially optimal solution for the region.

Atemporal and intertemporal use of public lands, the determination of optimal levels of wilderness designation and habitat preservation, and the appropriate regulation of natural resources have all been "hot button" issues in the American West for quite some time now. In this paper, I propose and describe a research agenda which promises to yield interesting and useful new policy insights into these fractious resource issues.

Water and nutrient fluxes as indicators for the stability of different land use systems on the terra firme near Manaus.

This project has by objective the quantification of water and nutrient fluxes in an experimental plantation, which is composed of different monoculture and polyculture systems with mainly perennial crops, as well as in primary and secondary forest at EMBRAPA-CPAA (Manaus, AM, Brasil). The flux measurements are expected to provide information about the efficiency with which the different land use systems exploit the available resources (water, nutrients) on the infertile soils of the area and minimize unproductive losses, e.g., through leaching. Efficient resource utilization is seem as a procondition of sustainable land use on this site.

Uso da terra no municipio de Aquidauana em 1990 - Pantanal.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as formas de uso da Terra no municipio de Aquidauana, localizado no sudeste do Pantanal, em Mato Grosso do Sul. Foram mapeadas as areas antropicas e identificadas e quantificadas as respectivas classes tematicas de uso. Utilizaram-se imagens de satelite Landsat 5-TM, em papel, na escala 1:250.000, na composicao colorida 3B, 4G e 5R para espacializacao das informacoes e um Sistema de Informacoes Geograficas para a quantificacao das areas. A area do municipio foi calculada em 1.485.526 ha, dos quais 76,8% esta inserida na planicie do Pantanal. Global change is the net effect of individual and interactive effects of changes in land use, atmospheric composition, biological diversity, and climate. A synthesis of the past six years' activities of the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project of the IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) deals with global change effects as ecosystem responses and living with global change. Ecosystem responses are considered in terms of changes in function and vegetation composition/structure. Field experiments of elevated CO2 effects on aboveground biomass show, on average, a positive effect on biomass, ranging from -20% to +80%. Basing Superfund Cleanups on Future Land Uses: Promising Remedy or Dubious Nostrum?

Supporters of the effort to link cleanups at hazardous waste sites to the sites' expected land uses claim that amending language in the federal Superfund statute to allow this may yield a number of benefits.
